Lanna - The forgotten kingdom you absolutely have to taste

Everyone knows Bangkok. And Phuket too. But Lanna?

If you've never heard that name before, you're not alone — and that's exactly what motivated me to create this box.

I grew up in Chiang Mai. Surrounded by temples, morning markets, and bowls of steaming Khao Soi. For me, Lanna isn't a destination; it's home. And now, from Germany, I sometimes miss that feeling so much that I decided to simply bring it to you.

What exactly is Lanna?

Lanna — written ล้านนา in Thai — literally translates to "Kingdom of a Million Rice Fields". It's not a modern place on the map, but a millennia-old cultural heritage that still thrives in northern Thailand today.

The Lanna Kingdom flourished from the 13th to the 18th century, encompassing large parts of present-day Northern Thailand as well as areas of Myanmar and Laos. Its center was Chiang Mai — still the vibrant soul of the North, with an old city moat, hundreds of temples, and a charm that simply makes you forget Bangkok.

What makes Lanna so special: It's not simply "Thailand, but cooler." It has its own language (the Kham Mueang dialect), its own architecture, its own festivals, and — most importantly — a completely independent cuisine.

Northern Thai Cuisine: Completely Different from What You Think

Most people know Thai food as sweet-spicy-sour, with lots of coconut milk and fresh herbs. That's true — for Central Thailand.

In the North, everything is a little different. The cuisine is earthier, deeper, richer in aroma. Less sweetness, more umami. More roasted spices, more fermented pastes, more influences from neighboring cultures — Chinese traders, Burmese hill tribes, Laotian neighbors. Lanna has always been a crossroads of cultures, and you can taste it.

The most famous dish? Khao Soi. A golden-yellow curry noodle soup with a story that surprises many.

The Story Behind the North's Most Famous Dish

Khao Soi is now the flagship of Lanna cuisine — but its roots lie far away. The dish was brought to the North by Muslim Chinese traders who traveled for centuries on the trade routes between China and the Lanna Kingdom. They brought spices, techniques, and this special noodle soup with them.

The locals loved it and made it their own: a rich coconut milk base, soft curry, crispy fried noodles on top. A fusion that became the soul of the North over generations.

Today, you'd sit in a small noodle shop by the moat in Chiang Mai — and understand why this soup always ranks high on global lists of the best noodle dishes.

What's in Our First Lanna OMGBOX?

The Thailand Vol. 1 - Lanna OMGBOX contains a little journey through the North — curated with dishes and snacks that are personally dear to my heart.

The centerpiece: The Khao Soi Cooking Kit. Directly from Chiang Mai. Everything you need to recreate this iconic dish at home. Whether with chicken or beef — once you try it, you'll know exactly why everyone's talking about it.

Lay's Miang Kham Flavor. Miang Kham is a Northern Thai dish that tastes sweet, sour, spicy, and fresh all at once — in a single bite. The authentic ingredients are almost impossible to get in Germany. So I brought you the flavor as a chip.

Coconut Rice Roll (Thong Muan). This is pure nostalgia for me. As a child, we'd go to the morning market on Sundays, and I'd watch the vendor roll out these thin, crispy rolls fresh on a hot pan. We'd take a whole bag home and eat them on the way. Simple. Good. Unforgettable.

Taro Fish Snack. Crispy, savory, slightly spicy — and honestly not as hot as the packaging suggests. For extra crunch, just pop it in the oven or microwave for a short while.

Coconut Water. After a bowl of Khao Soi, you'll know exactly why this is included. Light, refreshing, naturally sweet. The perfect finish.

Oh — and don't forget the music. I've put together a playlist of Northern classics that I listened to while curating this box. Some lyrics might sound unfamiliar, even if you speak Thai — that's our Lanna dialect. Our own little language.

More Than a Snack Package

I know that one box can't capture everything Lanna is about. But I hope it gives you a real feel for it — the warmth, the taste, the history. And maybe even a real OMG moment.

If you like the box, write to me or follow us on social media. Every box I curate is full of stories I want to tell you. This is just the beginning.

And if it doesn't live up to its promise? Then I'll personally take you to Chiang Mai. 😄
